Amigaville - Issue 4 Out Now!

It's been many a year since you've been able to pick up an Amiga magazine off the shelf of your local newsagent. I still have fond memories of cycling down to our local to pick up the latest copies of Amiga Power, CU Amiga, Amiga Format and Amiga Shopper back in the day (I didn't buy this many magazines every month, I might add!).

While the team at Amiga Future magazine (now celebrating a whopping 18 years!) do a fantastic job with their magazine, there's definitely room for another publication covering the scene.

Currently up to issue 4 is Amigaville, a PDF only Amiga magazine covering both gaming and the more serious side of our favourite machine.

Now, as this is a gaming blog I'll skip past the serious stuff and move straight over to the gaming coverage, which in this issue features reviews of:

• Pacmania
• Prince of Persia
• Heroquest
• Deluxe Galaga
• Castlevania

The above spans eight colourful pages, featuring a selection of screenshots, detailed reviews, and the author's own scores at the end, which, I have to say, are pretty harsh. Prince of Persia gets a lowly 62%, and the legendary Deluxe Galaga limps away with a mere 75%, for example.

Moving on, and the main game-related feature article "From Doom to Gloom: The World of First Person Shooters on the Commodore Amiga", covers pretty much what you'd expect from the title.

Spanning three full pages, this section takes a brief look at some of the Amiga's best known first person shooters. Documented in release order, you can see how the genre evolved on the Amiga over the course of time.

The whole issue spans a very respectable 36 pages, and this is even more impressive when you consider that, aside from the excellent front cover (produced by GreyFox), the entire magazine has been put together by one person, Brian Hedley.

Issue four costs a mere £2 to download, while issues 1 to 3 are free. You may want to check those out before diving in and parting with what would cost you about half a pint of beer.

I'm That Guy!

I am replaying Suikoden 2 at the moment, a game I last played back in something like 2001. I'm now playing it on PSN, purchasing it for something like $5.

 Funnily enough though, I actually owned the game back in 2001! The actual CD! FFVII basically took over my life when I was 11 years old and after completing it, and becoming obsessed with it, I started looking through my back copies of the Official Playstation Magazine to try and find some games that were like it in some way, part of this genre called "RPG" which I had never even known to have existed previously (I'm not sure I can be blamed for this either, because in the UK we hardly received any RPGs for consoles).

I made it my mission to check out the used sections of Electronic Boutique and the other second hand games shops near me (which included a shop called a record shop called Bebop and another which I think was called Games Express in Sutton, surrey).

 On one fateful day, I found it, Suikoden II, as I flicked through the boxes in Games Express. From what I remember, I think I payed an insignificant amount for the game, I certain don't remember having the save and go back, I'm guessing it must have been about £10. I took it home, I played the game through and I had a great time with it, it isn't too tricky and I completed it, getting the 'bad ending' the only ending I knew of at the time. And then I took it in a second hand game shop and sold it.

 I'm that guy! I had Suikoden II, now worth £150 on EBAY, and at points in the past worth even more. I have almost no recollection of exactly what I traded it in for. Sometimes I like to tell people I traded it in part exchange for Chrono Cross.... but I don't know for certain if that is true. I know I definitely got CC pretty soon after Suikoden II, but I don't know... another memory says I traded it in for Ergheiz (now worth as much as Suikoden II on EBAY! A game which I also traded in!), or possibly it was Destrega or Street Fighter Alpha 3. The thing I do remember though is that I was surprised at how much the store gave me for Suikoden II, I think it was £15 or something, more than I paid for it to begin with.... I think they got the recommended price out of a book.

 Anyway, I'm that guy, the guy that traded a super rare and expensive game in for almost nothing. But in all things Praise be Jesus Christ now and forever. Games are there for fun and recreation, and if we are really lucky, we can find something good and true and beautiful in them which can lead us to praise Him and bless Him and love Him more. Games aren't my life, my life is hid with Christ in God.

 I played a lot of great games back in the day, I owned and played almost every PS1 RPG released in the UK, and now I own Suikoden II once again on PSN, in all honesty I have no regrets that I sold it, but it makes a fun story. I am going to write a review on Suikoden II soon. There is a lot in this beautiful game which is genuinely inspirational and supportive of the truths of our holy faith.

Back to the good ol'Lite-on optical drive. Honestly, I say again and again, I pay very little attention to how I choose the optical drives – I simply choose the cheapest one. Years ago, while dating a rather unusual guy in college who will remain nameless, I attempted my very first tabletop RPG. At least I think that's what it was supposed to be. It was late, I didn't know how to play, and to be honest, I'm not sure he knew what he was doing either. He cast himself as a sage mysterious traveler. I have zero recollection of what my character was supposed to be. My only memory of the game play itself is spending an ungodly amount of time haggling over his character trying to gift me an invisibility cloak. Looking back, that could have been one of many warning signs our relationship wasn't going to work.

That was my one and only attempt to play a tabletop RPG—like ever, and it wasn't particularly positive.

However, that tiny taste was enough to ignite my curiosity. Ever since then, I've wanted to find a group who really knows how to play so I can learn from them. Current status: still looking.

These days, finding a good RPG group isn't the problem. As an author, I've got hordes of friends who actively play, some with groups they've been playing with for decades. Judging from the little I know about how the game works, being a good storyteller, character builder, and bold-faced liar would make writers amazing RPG players.

The real problem these days is time. Campaigns take a long time and my free nights are few and far between. The evenings I do have I want to spend with my family. As of now, I really want to learn how to play and justify spending that kind of time to dedicate entire evenings to gaming with friends. After all, it's just a game, right?

Just a game? JUST A GAME?! I can hear the cries rise from the webs as I write. I know how important these gaming nights are for those who enjoy it. These days, it's hard to find any social interaction that isn't screen based. The social health of our society as a whole depends on people finding activities where people are encouraged to work together and enjoy spending time together.

I'll find my group one day, perhaps when my kiddos are a touch older. I'll find my group. Today is not that day.

Never fear—this isn't a pity post. I do get my game on with my immediate family. We've worked hard to properly indoctrinate my kids in all geek essentials. The day my oldest finished reading the Star Trek Technical Manual was a proud one. When my youngest announced he wanted to write his own stories, it brought a tear to my eye. However, we've failed them by not teaching RPG basics starting young and by doing so might have damaged their chances of being accepted at MIT!

Instead, we've devoted long evenings discussing diplomatic strategy while playing Settlers of Catan. Off and on there have been days long Risk battles camped out on the kitchen table. The current favorite, by far, is a nameless game I may or may not have borrowed from something Mary Robinette Kowal mentioned in a Writing Excuses podcast. She called the game exquisite corpse. We are still calling it "that game where you draw the pictures and then turn the page and describe them," which is exactly that. We make little paper books and number the pages. On the first page each player writes a phrase, something like, "The chicken lays an egg." The book is then passed to the next player who draws a chicken laying an egg. Pass three is when things get interesting. Without looking at the first page, the player must write a phrase describing the picture. Suddenly, the chicken laying an egg is now a pig pooping, or a shrub next to a grenade. This 'telephone' style game devolves quickly and has the same effect as mad libs—everyone rolling on the floor in laughter when the completed books are shared. 

It's the silliness that sells it.

One-on-one games with my youngest, now seven, are always the most amusing. He is the text book example of "youngest child syndrome," meaning he thinks he can get away with anything as long as he smiles, and if that doesn't work, he goes and asks dad. It's the equivalent of playing Russian roulette, sometimes the gameplay results in smiles and survival, sometimes you get shot. He loves making his own rules, always to his own benefit. However, some games don't fare well with abrupt rule changes—like chess. When things go poorly, he makes like a Tasmanian devil, complete with the snarling.

Here's chess according to Mr. Pants: set up the board according to traditional game play. Player moves one or more pieces and informs player 2 the name of the move i.e. "Nuclear blast wave!" Player two then does something to 'protect' his pieces. Player one then proceeds to wipe anywhere between one and sixteen of player two's pieces from the board with the appropriate sound effect. Player two collects his/her pieces from around the room, and under the couch before setting them back on to the board in any arrangement the patience of player one permits. Player two then must play according the standard chess rules—as long as they don't 'kill' any of player one's pieces.

I've got a stress-induced bald spot from playing this game.

Through my experience of playing table games with my family I've learned several important lessons. Here they are in a bulleted list for your convenience.

• House rules are essential: While playing the textbook version of any game is the goal, it's important to adapt the rules so all players can enjoy the game. Some of these rules might include the "buddy system" where a non-reader is paired with a reading player so they can figure out what their cards say. This is closely paired with having a mentor readily available so should the younger player not know what to do, they can get help should they need it. Note—while a sibling makes a great reading buddy, they make terrible mentors. Their goal is to win and therefore they tend to give advice that isn't terribly helpful. Parents and other adults who don't care about the outcome of the game make terrific mentors, because they love to see the youngest player beat the socks off their older siblings (or maybe that's just me.)
• The goal should be having a good time: Before game play starts, when bad sportsmanlike behavior crops up, and when someone starts pouting, this message needs to be instilled over and over (and over, and over…). Younger children who are losing, despite their mentor's efforts, often need the most reminding. Eventually the life lesson of "not throwing a fit when things don't go your way" starts to stick, although I've met some adults who need reminding. Perhaps they should come to gaming night…
• Simple paper and pencil games are often the best:Games don't have to be complicated or require extensive equipment and paraphernalia for a group to have a good time together. The best experiences I've had with group gaming have been with simple paper games. There is a wealth of ideas online or ask other people about their favorites. Some of these games have been passed down generations. These can include charades, storytelling games, bluffing games, and getting to know you games, to name a few.

No matter your preference, I hope you find time to play a game or two with the people you enjoy spending time with. Bring snacks, your smiles, and be ready to have a great time.

Happy New Year! Jump Rope Activities: Long Rope And Partner Tricks

This month all of my students are learning how to jump rope.
Before Christmas,

Switching Handles is one of the partner tricks the students learned. 

the 1st-5th grade students learned about single rope jumping and partner tricks.  This month they are practicing with long ropes and Chinese jump ropes.  All of my 3rd-5th grade classes have been practicing a Group Jump Rope Routine as our fitness activity.  This is the same routine I will use for our jump rope assembly at the end of the month.  We will have Jump Rope for Heart on Valentine's Day again this year!  I hope to post a video of the group jump rope routine soon!  I choreographed it to the song "JUMP" by Van Halen.

Long Rope Jumping Game:
Pre-K - 2nd grade students learned a game called "Snake in the Grass".  This game idea came from one of my favorite authors, Robert Pangrazi, in his book "Dynamic Physical Education".  I have included many videos of this game below.  Students move the "snake" side to side while the jumper jumps or leaps over it.  If the jumper successfully jumps OVER the snake without touching it 5 times, they "win" and the turn goes to the next person.  If they jump and land on top of the snake, the snake wins and they lose their turn.  They must also land on their feet and not fall down on the floor!

Twirling and jumping a long rope:
1st-5th grade students practiced twirling and jumping a long rope.  We used the cue words "rainbow-click" to remember how to have good form (rainbow at the top, hear the click on the floor).  They have a lot of fun jumping with long  ropes, and it's a great way to practice cooperation and teamwork!

Partner Tricks and Partner Routines: 
Check out the videos below.  I taught the students how to build a partner routine.  This includes a beginning, 3-5 tricks, and an ending.  They were also encouraged to build their own "freestyle" routine which consists of the same skills - beginning, tricks, and an ending.

These work well with all age levels.  Some students have begun to learn a basic pattern, "Americans" pattern, and the Name Game.  I will continue to teach this to my students later this month.  Chinese ropes are a good option to have at our Jump Rope for Heart event because they involve no twirling!

Daily Dozen:
All Pre-K-5th graders do the Daily Dozen every day!  The students are becoming stronger!  Their form is getting better, and I am so impressed with their push-ups!  They are working on touching their nose to the floor. The student in the picture below had light up shoes.....so we turned the lights down and did the daily dozen so we could all see his shoes light up.  It was pretty cool!
